CALI COWL … FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Wow … I can’t believe it’s fall! Although it’s not cold here yet … not even somewhat cool … it’s definitely time to start making beanies, scarves, and cowls.

This cowl is simple to create, using basic crochet stitches, but features a beautiful textured design. Although the crochet pattern is free below, a PDF version is also available on both Etsy and Ravelry. Click on the link below to view the crochet pattern in Etsy.

Cali Cowl Crochet Pattern

Necessary Supplies: J Crochet Hook, Medium Weight Yarn (approximately 251 yd – 1 skein Lion Brand Heartland), Yarn Needle, and Scissors

Yarn Used: Lion Brand Heartland, Color: Sequoia

Gauge: 13 dc approximately 4″ wide

Directions:

  • Row 1:  Ch 44.
  • Row 2:  In the 3rd ch from the hook, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  *Skip 2 ch.  Complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc in the next stitch.*  Repeat the pattern enclosed in the * * until the end of the row.  (Should have 2 ch left at the end of the row.) Skip the next ch and complete 1 hdc in the last st.  Ch 2 and turn.  (You should create 14 (hdc-ch 2-hdc) clusters.)
  • Row 3:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 4:  In the 2nd dc of each 3 dc cluster, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  Complete 1 hdc at the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 5:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 6:  In the 2nd dc of each 3 dc cluster, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  Complete 1 hdc at the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 7:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 8:  In the 2nd dc of each 3 dc cluster, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  Complete 1 hdc at the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 9:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 10:  In the 2nd dc of each 3 dc cluster, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  Complete 1 hdc at the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 11:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 12:  In the 2nd dc of each 3 dc cluster, complete 1 hdc, ch 2, and 1 hdc.  Complete 1 hdc at the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Row 13:  Complete 3 dc in each ch 2 space.  End with 1 dc in the top of the ch 2 turning ch.  Ch 1 and turn.
  • Rows 14 – 16:  Complete 1 sc/st.  Ch 1 and turn.  (44 st counting ch 1)
  • Row 17:  Complete 1 sc/st.  Ch 2 and turn.
  • Rows 18 – 65:  Repeat rows 2 – 17 (3) times
  • Cut end strand approximately 18 – 24” long.  Align the 2 ends and sew together using a yarn needle and the end strand of yarn.  Knot to end, weaving strands into the cowl.

The Cali Cowl is now complete!
