NEWBORN ELEPHANT HAT … FREE CROCHET PATTERN

This little Elephant Hat will always hold a special place in my heart as it was my very first request. This hat was one of my very first patterns! I created the Elephant Hat and was so in love with it that I created the pattern. Although the pattern has been tweaked a bit over the years, the heart of it is still the same.

The Elephant Hat can be created by itself (pattern shown below) or paired with a diaper cover or cocoon for a precious newborn set. The Elephant Hat & Cocoon Crochet Pattern has been recently updated and is available on both Etsy and Ravelry. Click on the link below to view the Elephant Hat & Cocoon Crochet Pattern on Etsy in PDF format.

NEWBORN ELEPHANT HAT & COCOON CROCHET PATTERN

The Elephant Hat was created using the following stitches: chains, single crochets, double crochets, and slip stitches. It is a fun hat for a beginner crocheter. Although the pattern is provided FREE below, the PDF (which is available on both Etsy and Ravelry) includes additional pictures and instructions to create the cocoon!

ASSEMBLE ELEPHANT EARS … complete for both ears

  • Position an inner ear in the center of each outer ear, aligning the flat portions (portion created by 8 single crochets) of both.  Using a yarn needle and main color yarn, sew around the outer border of each inner ear to secure in place.  Knot to end.  Trim loose strands, weaving the loose strands into each outer ear.

ASSEMBLE EACH EAR ASSEMBLY TO THE HAT

  • Align the ear assemblies on each side of the hat.  Place the bottom edge of each ear immediately above the contrasting color portion of the hat (last 2 rows created with contrasting color).  Secure in place by sewing the flat portion of each elephant ear (created by 8 single crochets) assembly to the hat.  See reference pictures for ear alignment.  (The ears should be oriented so that the wider sections are towards the top of the hat.)

CREATE ELEPHANT’S HAIR … POM-POM … main color and contrasting color yarn

  • Gather the 2 strands of yarn (1 strand of each color).   Keeping the ends loose, continuously wrap the yarn around your 4 fingers.  (See reference picture for details.)  Once you have wrapped the yarn 12 times, creating a mound of yarn around your fingers, cut the yarn.
  • Slide the yarn off of your fingers.  Cut a new piece of yarn (either yarn color) approximately 8” in length.  Using the new piece of yarn, tie a knot around the center of the mound.  Do NOT trim the 8” piece of yarn as it will be used to secure the pom pom onto the hat.
  • Cut each loop.
  • Fluff the pompom and trim the pieces, making them all the same length.

ATTACH THE POM-POM TO THE TOP OF THE HAT

  • Position the pom-pom in place on the top of the hat.  Thread the end strands through the hat and knot on the underneath side of the hat to secure the pom-pom in place.  Trim, weaving strands into the underside of the hat.

ABBREVIATIONS: CC – contrasting color, ch – chain, dc – double crochet, MC – main color, rnd(s) – round(s), sc – single crochet, sl st – slip stitch, st – stitch
